              A Brief History of:
"St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church"

"Founded 1867" St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church of St. Albans, West Virginia, was established by Reverend Moses P. Hall in the home of Henry Brooks, with the cooperation of family groups living in the vicinity of the mouth of Coal River, St. Albans, West Virginia.
The first church building was constructed in the year 1872 on what is now Pennsylvania Avenue, two and one-half blocks south of Main Street.
In 1884, ground was purchased for the second building which is now on the southwest corner of Eighth Avenue and B Street. This building structure was dedicated to service in 1885.
The third structure, this present edifice, was constructed in 1921 at a cost of $50,000. It included a basement above ground, a sanctuary with a balcony. The first services were held in the basement on May 6, 1923. This edifice was designed and supervised by the eminent pastor, Reverend J. Thomas Reid. The building was completed and dedicated during Christmas week of 1925.
The physical facilities have expanded threefold. The spiritual influence is manifold with enlarged membership, evangelism, and steadfast gospel. Christian rewards are visible in vigorous outreach to the community and environ. The tempo of the church is quickening, and the congregation is keeping in step. We acknowledge (click here) the endeavors of those pioneer Christians who had a dream of this present edifice and uplift of Christianity.
St. Paul Baptist through its many years of existence in rendering service to God and humanity can be proud of having had the meritorious services of twenty-two faithful & efficient pastors. Rev. Michael A. Poke, Sr., our twenty-second and present pastor, has been with us since June 10, 2001.
St. Paul Baptist Church strives to fulfill the mission directed by St. Paul, one of God's greatest disciples, going forth and preaching the gospel, edifying and praising God.

"For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." -11 Corinthians 5

Dedication

In dedication to those stalwart men and women who forged ahead, amid adversity and sacrifice, in their Christian endeavors to make St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church strong, constant and inspiring in its spiritual outreach, we pause to reflect upon our heritage and blessings.

We reap the benefits of their foresight, perseverance, faith, and industriousness. This Web Site marks another triumph of The Almighty in the establishment of a firm foundation for the teachings of JESUS: specifically, the salvation of humanity.

To remind us of our responsibility in upholding these religious principles entrusted to us by our revered church forebearers, let us recall the words of James Weldon Johnson on the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Signing of the Emancipation Proclamation:
                                       ‘…stand erect and without fear,
And for our foes let this suffice –
We've bought a rightful sonship here,
And we have more than paid the price.

Courage! Look out, beyond, and see
                                     The far horizon's beckoning span!
                                     Faith in your God-known destiny!
We are a part of some great plan."

St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, in this its
second century, "believes God will not let its
                                            efforts come to naught."
